The Government of Rwanda (GoR) is planning to undertake the construction of geothermal power plants in Rwanda.

The project involves the construction of 310MW geothermal power plants. It includes the construction of powerhouses, substations, cooling towers, the installation of steam turbines, condenser with air cooler, switchgear, a control system, transformers and the laying of transmission lines.

The geothermal sources have been identified between Gisenyi and Karisimbi Volcano and Bugarama.

Energy Development Corporation Ltd has been appointed as the developer.

Belgian Development Agency approved US$74 million to spend over three years to explore the potential of geothermal energy in Rwanda, of which US$30 million will be spent for exploration of three wells and preparatory works.

In May 2017, GoR is waiting for the feasibility study reports results.

The project involves the construction of 310MW geothermal power plants in Rwanda.

The US$935 million project includes the following:
