The Government of Papua New Guinea (GoPNG) is planning to undertake the construction of a hydroelectric power plant in Chimbu Province, Papua New Guinea.
The project involves the construction of a hydropower plant that generates approximately 1,800MW power.
It includes the construction of a dam, canals, a powerhouse, substations and related infrastructure, and the installation of turbines, generators and safety systems and the laying of transmission lines, and the upgrade and replacement of 42 bridges
The project is planned to be implemented under the Private Public Partnership program.
On April 29, 2015, Salini Impregilo S.p.A has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with GoPNG to jointly develop the project. Salini Impregilo will initially undertake the feasibility study and submit the report to the government. Subject to approvals, Salini will then proceed with the construction of the plant over a five-year period.
Kumul Consolidated Holdings has been appointed as study consultant and Green Point Resources as lead consultant.
In May 2016, feasibility studies are completed.
In March 2017, the project is facing delay due to the PPP Act which is currently under review.
The project involves the construction of a hydro power facility that generates approximately 1,800MW power in Chimbu Province, Papua New Guinea.
