The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) is undertaking the Water Supply Expansion project in Brong Ahafo, Ghana.
The project involves the construction of water treatment facilities to increase the capacity from 6,800m3 (cubic meters) a day to 44,000m3. It will include the construction of dams, reservoirs, water treatment plant, water pipelines and compressor station facilities.
The project also includes the construction of a dam on the Tano River near Abesim to store water and to also expand the treatment of water capacity to meet the demand shortfall in the municipality, upgrading six urban water supply systems in the Brong-Ahafo Region and other related facilities.
In September 2010, the government approved a mid-term concessionary loan for the project.
In July 2011, China MCC20 Group Corp., Ltd and MCC8 Group Company Ltd form a consortium and signed cooperation agreement for the project.
In December 2011, the Chinese government has expressed interest to undertake an expansion of the Sunyani Water Supply System by funding the project.
In February 2012, MCC8 secures US$47 million from Export-Import Bank of the United States for the project.
Sal Consult has been appointed as an environmental engineering consultant for the project.
In October 2014, GWCL has signed a contract with China International Water & Electric Corporation to undertake construction works for the project.
As of March 2017, Parliament Approves budget for Sanitation and Water Resources Ministry and funds are being sourced for a water expansion project.
