Gas Natural Regasification Italy SpA (GNRI), a subsidiary of Gas Natural Fenosa, is planning to undertake the Zaule LNG Terminal in Trieste, Italy.
The project involves the construction of a regasification terminal with a capacity of 8,000 million m3 per annum.
The project will include the construction of two cryogenic tanks of 140,000m3 of LNG each, a regasification plant, five sprays of seawater, two submerged combustion vaporizers that work as back-up and as an emergency system, the installation of a jetty for mooring tankers of capacity between 70,000m3 and 145,000m3, mechanical and electrical equipment; safety and security systems and the construction of related infrastructure facilities.
URS Italy SpA was appointed as the consulting engineer.
In July 2009, the project secured environmental impact assessment (EIA) approval from the Italian Ministry of Environment. However, the EIA permit was suspended in April 2013.
The project has been facing delay because of the protests due to environmental issues.
In July 2016, Trieste City Council unanimously approved a resolution in which it reiterated its opposition to the implementation of the project
In October 2016, preliminary investigation on the development is underway.
