The GMR (Badirnath) Hydro Power Generation Ltd, a subsidiary of GMR Group, is planning to undertake the construction of Alaknanda Hydroelectric Power Plant project in Chamoli, Uttarakhand, India.
The project involves the construction of hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 300MW. The project will be executed into three units of 100MW each. It also involves the construction of a power house, a substation, access roads, 40m high dam, a 3km headrace tunnel and underground penstock and reservoir.
It also includes the construction of a diversion channel, a barrage, the installation of turbines, generators and the laying of the transmission lines and related facilities.
GMR was awarded a contract for a period of 45 years and is extendable for another 20 years, which will be implemented on Built, Own and Operate (BOO) basis from Implementation Agreement.
On August 8, 2008, the project received clearance from Central Electricity Authority.
Halcrow was appointed as surveyor to prepare a detailed report for the project including topographic surveys, geological site investigations and hydrological studies.
In September 2010, Hindustan Construction Company was appointed as EPC contractor for the project. The contract is to be executed in two lots. The first lot involves main civil works package for coffer dams, a diversion channel, a barrage, a power intake, a desanding system and a part Head Race Tunnel.
The project will be funded in 80:20 debts-to equity ratio basis.
In July 2015, the developer has submitted the design modifications to the committee formed by the Union Environment Ministry.
In April 2016, the project secured environment approval.
