The Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Ltd (GMDC) and National Aluminium Company Ltd (NALCO) are jointly planning to construct the alumina refinery in Kutch, Gujarat.
The project involves the construction of an alumina refinery with a capacity of 1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and 0.5 million tonnes aluminium smelter on 608ha of land. It is being constructed in two phases.
The US$882 million first phase of the project includes the construction of an alumina plant on 400ha of land whereby alumina will be extracted from the ore bauxite by means of a process at an alumina refinery while the second phase includes the construction of an aluminium smelter.
The project includes the construction of material loading and unloading units, storage units, melting and deposition units.
GMDC planned to undertake the project through a joint venture partnership. In 2010, nine companies have submitted their expression of interests (EOI) to form a joint venture partnership for the development of the project.
GMDC has shortlisted four firms including JSW Aluminium Ltd, Hindalco Industries Ltd, NALCO and Jaypee Associates Ltd.
In January 2011, GMDC received EoI from companies including Gujarat Foils Ltd, Aluchem Ltd (US), Dubai Aluminium Ltd, Adani Group and Jindal Steel and Power Ltd along with the previously four shortlisted companies.
In February 2012, NALCO emerged as the only qualified bidder.
In October 2013, NALCO was selected as the final bidder to form a joint venture partnership for the development of the project. GMDC has 26% in the joint venture.
In October 2014, GMDC has acquired 104ha of land for the initial phase of the project. NALCO has submitted a Detailed Feasibility Report (DFR).
In December 2015, GMDC and NALCO prepared the detailed project report (DPR).
The project is facing delay due to feasibility issue of the project on account of non-availability of adequate bauxite to support refinery throughout the useful plant life of 30 to 40 years.
