The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) is planning to construct a section of the S1 expressway in Silesian voivodeship, Poland.
The project involves the construction of about 40km of road. It includes the construction of carriageways, seven junctions, service roads, road separators, and pedestrian ways and the installation of safety and security systems.
Within the section two bypass roads will be constructed for: Oswiecim and Bierun.
In February 2013, a feasibility study was delivered by KV Projekty, however, due to protests, primarily from a local mine 'Brzeszcze', a supplementary study was ordered in March 2014. It was agreed that the cost of the supplementary study would be covered by the owner of the 'Brzeszcze' mine.
In September 2014, the authorities of Silesian Voivodeship signed the territorial contract with the Polish government regarding investments in the region for 2014-2023, including financing of the proposed construction of the S1 section.
The project will be funded through the state budget, the European Union funds, and local governments.
In June 2017, GDDKiA issued tender to develop a program concept for the construction of the expressway.
Planning activities are underway. GDDKiA is expected to issue Construction contract tenders in the second quarter of 2018. Construction work is expected to commence in 2019 and scheduled to be completed by 2023.
