Eskom is planning the Upington Concentrating Solar Power Plant project in Northern Cape, South Africa.
The project involves the construction of a 100MW concentrating solar power plant. It includes the construction of powerhouse, substations, and the installation of photovoltaic panels, transmission grids, transformers, generators, and the laying of transmission lines.
The project is being funded by World Bank, African Development Bank, Clean Technology Fund, European Investment Bank (EIB) , Kreditanstalt fur Wiederaufbau (KfW) Bank, Agence Française de Développement (French Development Agency (AFD)).
In April 2012, Request for Interest (RFI) documentation was released for the project and potential suppliers and contractors with May 8, 2012 as submission due date.
In October 2013, the finance institution Agence Française de Développement agreed to provide US$119 million loan for the development of the project.
On August 7, 2014, EIB agreed to provide US$102 million for the development of the project.
Planning activities are underway.
