Empresa de Generacion Electrica SA (Egesa) is undertaking the 223.8 MW Changuinola II Hydropower Plant project in Changuinola, Bocas del Toro, Panama.
The project involves the construction of a concrete dam, a reservoir, a tunnel, a powerhouse, a switchyard and related infrastructure, the installation of turbines, generators and other equipment, and the laying of transmission lines.
The project is also known as Chan II.
The construction of the project was awarded to AES Chanquinola, a subsidiary of AES Corporation. However, due to some administrative issues, the contract was canceled and the tender process has been restarted.
Earlier project value was US$900 million that is increased to US$1,025 million.
Odebrecht Energia has been awarded as DBOM contractor.
Egesa submitted the detail design and environmental impact study (EIS) to the planning authority in June 2015.
In April 2017, Egesa and Odebrecht Energia mutually terminated the DBOM contract. Planning activities are ongoing to restart the tender process.
