Essar Oil Limited (ESSAROIL) is undertaking the Coal Bed Methane Phase III project at Raniganj in Bardhaman district, West Bengal, India.
The project involves the construction of coal-bed methane gas production facilities with a capacity of 5 million m3/day. It includes the drilling of additional 650 development and production wells and other related infrastructure, the installation of eight group gathering stations and one main compressor station, the laying of interconnecting pipeline and transportation pipeline network.
The wells will be drilled to a target depth of around 2,000m with a combination of low-capacity rigs for the surface section and higher-capacity rigs for the coal-bearing section.
Netherland, Sewell & Associates, Inc. (NSAI) has been appointed as the environmental consultant for the project.
In March 2013, the project received environmental clearance. Currently, planning activities on the project are underway.
In June 2013, ESSAROIL announced that out of 650 wells, 135 have been drilled, of which 57 are in production, with the balance in dewatering stage.
In December 2013, Greka Drilling Ltd was awarded the drilling contract.
In September 2014, drilling works on 200 wells were completed.
In February 2015, drilling works on 254 wells were completed and requisite infrastructure including pipelines to supply CBM gas to end consumers including three Gas Gathering Stations (GGS) were completed.
