ESB is planning to build a pilot wave energy project at Killard, near County Clare, Munster Province, Ireland.

The project involves the construction of a 5MW pilot wave energy farm. It includes the construction of power related infrastructure, the installation of turbines and power control units, and the laying of transmission lines.

On November 3, 2010, a memorandum of understanding was signed between ESB and four wave technology partners; Aquamarine Power, Ocean Energy Ltd, Pelamis Wavepower, and Wavebob, to participate in the project.

In March 2011, ESB applied to the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government for foreshore exploration licenses to initiate marine surveys.

On February 15, 2012, the environmental scoping document was prepared suggesting Killard Point, Caherlean as the preferred location.

In May 2014, Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland granted US$2 million in funding to deploy five wave energy devices off the coast of County Clare.

On July 8, 2014, the European Commission awarded US$32 million funding under the NER 300 funding program for the project.

ESB is in process to apply for planning permission.

The project involves the construction of a 5MW pilot wave energy farm at Killard Point, Caherlean, County Clare, Ireland.

The US$56 million project includes the following:

1. Installation of turbines

2. Installation of power control units

3. Laying of transmission lines

4. Construction of power related infrastructure
