Essar Steel Algoma Inc. (ESA) is planning to upgrade a steel plant in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada.
The project involves upgrade of the steel plant. It includes the construction of production units, warehouses, distribution units and related infrastructure, and the installation of machinery and safety systems.
On July 24, 2015, Ontario Province and the Federal Government of Canada agreed to provide US$45.6 million grand for the development of the project. It includes a US$22.8 million interest-free loan from the Federal Government's Advanced Manufacturing Fund and a US$22.8 million grant from the Province's Ministry of Northern Development and Mines and Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp.
In July 2016, Ontario Steel Investments signed a letter of intent with the Local 2251 for acquisition of Essar Steel Algoma Inc.
Planning activities are underway.Construction works are expected to be completed by 2022.
