Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) is undertaking the construction of a hydroelectric power plant in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The project involves the construction of a 250MW hydroelectric power plant. It includes the construction of a 60m high 650m length Asphalt Core Rock Fill Dam (ACCRAD) that irrigates up to 27,000ha of land in Oromia and Somali regional states, 16.5km tunnels, underground powerhouse, spillway with side channel, a substation, a control unit, a switch yard and an admin office, the installation of two vertical Francis Turbines of 125.4mw each, generators and transformers; laying of a 400kv, 75km transmission line to the nearest substation at Genale-Dawa III.

The project is financed by CDC Group of UK and the Norway’s Norfund.

Contingent Technology and Globeleq carried out environmental and social impact assessments.

In February 2017, EEPCo entered into a memorandum of understanding with Contingent Technology and Globeleq. The companies will invest and undertake the construction works on the project.

Construction works are expected to commence in the end of 2017 and are slated to be completed by 2022.

The project involves the construction of a 250MW hydroelectric power plant Genale Dawa River Basin in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The US$850 million project includes the following:
