The Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland (DoTMR) and Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development (DoIRD) is planning to build bridge sections over Haughton River and Pink Lily Lagoon in Shire of Burdekin, a local government area located 50km south of Townsville in North Queensland, Australia.
The project involves the construction of two higher level bridges and road approaches. It includes the construction of support structures, piers, thoroughfares, viaducts and related facilities, the installation of side barriers and information boards, and the elimination of two at-grade rail crossings at the Bruce Highway intersections with the Woodstock Giru road and Hodel Road, south of Haughton.
In April 2013, DoTMR incorporated the proposed development as a priority project for the region. Subsequently, the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development (DoIRD) announced its commitment towards funding the project.
In August 2013, DoIRD unveiled the proposed project plans as part of the overall Bruce Highway development program.
In May 2014, DoIRD announced that as part of its development portfolio, the project will be implemented in 2018-2019.
The Australian Government and the Queensland Government have committed to provide US$306 million for the project.
On May 5, 2017, DoTMR issued Expression of Interest(EoI) for the Detailed Design and Construction of the project with submission date on June 2, 2017.
The project will be delivered via a competitive Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) procurement process.
As of June 2017, DoTMR is in process of reviewing responses to request for proposals. A stage two contract is expected to be awarded in February 2018.
Construction is expected to commence in August 2018 and complete in the third quarter of 2021.
