The Department of Energy, South Africa (DoE), is undertaking the construction of Khobab Wind Farm project in South Africa.
The project involves the construction of a 140MW power plant. It includes the construction of a substation and access roads, the installation of 61 turbines with 19m diameter, generators and transformers, and the laying of transmission lines.
In October 2013, DoE selected Mainstream Renewable Power as a developer under the third round of the South African Government’s Renewable Energy Procurement Programme to develop the project.
Mainstream Renewable Power will implement the project together with Actis, Thebe Investment Corporation,Old Mutual, Futuregrowth Asset Management, Genesis Eco-Energyin and Lereko Metier Sustainable Capital.
The consortium of Murray & Roberts and Conco has been appointed as construction contractor and Siemens Wind has been appointed as supply and install contractor. Bowman & Gilfillan has been appointed legal adviser, Simmons & Simmons as the financial advisor and GRI as manufacturing contractor for turbine towers for the project.
On February 12, 2015, DoE secured financial closure for the project.
On September 9, 2015, construction works commenced.
On June 30, 2016, foundation works commenced.
On December 5, 2016, DoE has completed wind turbine foundations works.
Construction works are scheduled to be completed in December 2017.
The project involves the construction of a 140MW wind farm in Namakwa district, Northern Cape, South Africa.
