Deepwater Wind (Deepwater) is planning to undertake the construction of a Offshore Wind Farm project in Massachusetts, the US.
The project involves the construction of 1,000MW offshore wind farm. It includes the construction of substation, the installation of wind towers, 250 turbines, generators, transformers, electric feeder system, and the laying of transmission lines.
In 2011, US Department of Interior (DoI)'s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) announced to develop wind farm on the Rhode Island/ Massachusetts wind energy area and issued notice for auction to lease it to developer.
In 2012, nine companies shown interest in the project comprising Deepwater Wind (Deepwater), Energy Management Inc (of the Cape Wind project), Electricite de France SA, Fishermen's Energy LLC, Iberdrola SA, Neptune Wind LLC, Sea Breeze Energy LLC, U.S. Mainstream Renewable Power (Offshore) Inc, and US Wind Inc.
In June 2013, BOEM released a revised environmental assessment (EA).
On July 31, 2013, BOEM conducted the auction where Deepwater, Sea Breeze Energy and US Wind Inc. participated and subsequently Deepwater selected as developer.
In September 2013, BOEM executed the commercial wind energy leases with Deepwater.
In March 2014, BOEM granted Deepwater a 12 month extension of its preliminary term for Commercial Lease.
Planning activities on the project are underway. Construction works are expected to commence in 2019 and will be completed by 2022.
The project involves the construction of a 1,000MW offshore wind farm between Block Island and Martha’s Vineyard, coasts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts in the US.
The US$4,000 million project includes the following:
1. Construction of a substation
2. Installation of wind towers
3. Installation of 250 turbines
4. Installation of generators
5. Installation of transformers
