Delegation Generale aux Grands Travaux (DGGT) is undertaking the development of Sounda Gorge Hydroelectric power plant on the Kouilou river in Sounda, Congo.
The project involves the construction of a hydro electric power plant with a maximum capacity of 1,000MW, a dam, powerhouses, substations, access roads and the installation of turbines, generators and the laying of transmission lines and distribution lines.
In February 2014, Government of Congo and the International Finance Corp (IFC) agreed to develop the project on a public-private partnership basis.
In October 2014, the Government of Congo and the IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, signed a project services agreement to assess the feasibility of the Sounda Gorge hydroelectric project, this study will last for 18 months.
On March 28, 2017, a meeting was held between Government of Congo and World Bank officials to assess the options for the implementation of this vast structuring project at the headquarter of the Ministry of Land Development and Major Works.
The project is in the process of Land acquisition and the obtaining the declaration of public utility status.
Feasibility study activities are underway.
