Summary

China Three Gorges Corporation (CTGC) is planning to undertake the construction of Bunji Hydroelectric power plant just above the Diamer Bhasha Dam in Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan.

The project involves the construction of a 7,100MW hydro electric power plant.

The project include the construction of dam with a designed discharge of 1900 m3/sec, and five tunnels of 8km each. The dam will be built using the RCC construction method.

The project also includes the construction of power house, head race tunnels, the installation of turbines, generators, transformers and laying of transmission lines.

In 2009, the Pakistan government has signed an agreement with CTGC for the development of the project.

Earlier GoP has appointed Montreal Engineering Company to prepare an inventory and ranking study of the potential storage and hydro power generation of the plant.

Mott MacDonald, Sogreah Consultants (France), Nippon Koei (Japan) and Development & Management Consultants (Pakistan) has been appointed for feasibility and detailed design studies works on the project.

The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) was appointed to undertake feasibility study activities, detailed engineering design activities and preparation of tender documents for the project.

In January 2015, WAPDA completed detailed engineering design and tender documents for the project.

In November 2015, WAPDA submitted the policy to Ministry of Water and Power for approval.

China International Water and Electric Corporation, a subsidiary of CTGC will undertake the construction of the dam.

In May 2017, feasibility study and engineering design were completed and CTGC is waiting for approval from the Planning Commission.

Scope

The project involves the construction of a 7,100MW hydroelectric power plant in Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan.

The US$13,500 million project includes the following:

1. Construction of dam of height 190m

2. Construction of a powerhouse

3. Installation of turbines, generators, transformers

4. Construction of five tunnels of 8km each

5. Laying of transmission lines

6. Construction of other related infrastructure facilities
