Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd (CPCL), a subsidiary of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL), is undertaking the construction of a crude oil pipeline in Tamil Nadu, India.

The project involves the construction of a 17km, 42-inch crude oil pipeline from the port of Chennai to Manali refinery which will increase total effective capacity to 16 million tonnes. It will include the construction of pumping stations and a temperature control unit the installation of related machinery and equipment, safety and security systems, and the laying of pipelines.

The marine geo-physical study, geo-technical study, pipeline route survey and soil investigations have been completed. IOCL has been appointed as the project management consultant.

In February 2013, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board issued consent for the project implementation and CPCL obtained the right of way from the National Highways Authority of India.

The project has been reviewed by expert appraisal committee of Ministry of Environment and Forest and CPCL received the clearance from Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) to develop the project on January 11, 2014.

In May 2015, the project received clearance from Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Petroleum Explosives Safety Organisation.

In the third quarter of 2016, construction work commenced.

The construction work is underway.
