Coega Development Corporation (CDC) is planning to construct a combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant project at Zone 13, Coega Industrial Development Zone (Coega IDZ) in Eastern Cape, South Africa.
The project involves the construction of a 1,000MW CCGT power plant. The project includes the construction of a desalination plant and seawater cooling system, which could be associated with other demands for sea water usage, outgoing switch yard and 400kV/hr transmission lines to Eskom’s Dedisa injection sub-station.
In November 2009, Coega Development Corporation invited expression of interest (EOI) from parties with the required financial and technical capabilities to build and operate the power station. However, there has been a delay in issuing Request for Proposal (RFP) for the project due to regulatory issues.
Five environmental impact assessment studies supporting agas-to-power solution have been undertaken since 2006. Among them are EIA studies for rezoning of land in the IDZ, the establishment of a 400kV transmission line between the plant site and the Dedisa substation, and the marine pipeline servitude EIA.
In August 2015, CDC issued a tender notice for an environmental impact assessment for the project.
As of October 2016, the Department of Energy (DoE) approved the Coega IDZ location for the project development. Planning activities are underway.
