Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), plans to undertake the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib International Airport project in Bangladesh.
The project involves the construction of a new airport facility. It includes the construction of three runways of 4,419m length each, terminals, restaurants, parking space, administration building, other related infrastructure facilities; and installation of safety systems.
The new airport will be implemented on build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) basis. It is being financed by Government of Bangladesh and will be developed on Public-Private Partnership (PPP) basis..
The initial site of the airport was chosen as Arial Beel in Munshiganj district. However, after protests from the local residents, plans for the project were abandoned in August 2012.
In August 2014, plans were revived and the exact location of the project is still being finalized.
CAAB has identified four sites – Keyain in Munshiganj; Char Bilashpur and Char Latubdi in Dohar upazila of Dhaka; and Charjanajat in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur – as potential sites for the project development.
In February 2016, CAAB issued request for proposal (RFP) for the study consultant with the submission deadline as February 9, 2016.
On September 21, 2016, CAAB awarded US$14.8 million study consultant contract to Nippon Koei Co., Ltd and the agreement was signed. Under the agreement, Nippon Koei will finish the study work in one and a half years.
