Biliran Geothermal Inc (BGI) is undertaking the construction of a geothermal power plant in Eastern Visayas, Philippines.
The project involves the construction of a 50MW geothermal power plant and will be implemented in two phases under multiple units. Phase I involves the construction of 10MW with the installation of 13.2 KV line and the second phase involves the construction of 39MW with the installation of 69KV line.
It also includes the construction of a powerhouse, a substation, access roads the installation of generators and transformers, and the laying of transmission lines.
Resource Development Consultants Ltd has been appointed as the geotechnical consultant, the scope of work involves the surface-based geophysical survey comprising; seismic refraction tomography (SRT) to measure compressional wave velocity; MASW to measure shear wave velocity; Vertical electrical sounding to measure apparent resistivity; Laboratory testing from test pits and boreholes; Site walkover and geological mapping to confirm investigation locations and identify geo-hazards; supervision of 7 triple tubed boreholes; engineering geological logging of recovered materials on 24hr shifts; test pits investigations across site to understand near surface materials and suitability for shallow foundations, identify FILL material if required.
Mannvit Engineering has been appointed as the lead consultant the scope of work covers design review, steam gathering system, and initial power plant design, Project Management, Resident Engineer, and supervision.
Orka Energy provides the Section Engineer for civil works, GHD Pty Ltd has been appointed as the engineering consultant which provides civil works design and supervision.
BGI secured an environmental compliance certificate for exploration drilling and the power plant on December 6, 2012 and August 23, 2013, respectively.
On August 22, 2013, Biliran Geothermal Inc. signed an agreement with Icelandic Drilling Co. to conduct exploratory drilling on the site.
BGI is in the process of signing power supply agreements (PSA) and upon completion of PSA, main construction works will commence. The first two units, each of 5MW, are expected to complete by September 2018 and March 2019 respectively. The rest are scheduled to be completed between July 2021 and July 2023.
