Biffa Group Ltd (BGL) and Multifuel Energy Ltd (MEL) are planning to undertake a waste to energy facility in Shepshed, Leicestershire, the UK.
The project involves the construction of a 33MW waste to energy plant with a processing capacity of 350,000MTPA on 52ha of land. It includes the construction of processing units, a waste storage facility, a substation, a powerhouse and related infrastructure, the installation of transformers and equipment, and the laying of transmission lines.
RPS Planning & Development has been appointed as study consultant.
An environmental permit for the project was issued by the Environment Agency on June 8, 2011.
In November 2011, BGL submitted a planning application for developing the project.
In June 2012, BGL secured a planning consent from the Secretary of State for the project.
In April 2014, BGL submitted a scoping report to Leicestershire County Council to define the scope of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) studies required as part of the revised planning application.
In July 2014, BGL submitted a revised planning application to increase the processing capacity to 350,000MTPA from 300,000MTPA and the power generating capacity to 33MW from 21MW.
BGL entered into an exclusivity agreement with MEL, a joint venture of SSE Plc and Wheelabrator Technologies, to develop the project in September 2014.
Under these terms, MEL will take over the development of the project and undertake detailed design and construction activities. BGL will supply a proportion of fuel to the facility from its waste collection services in the region.
In October 2014, Leicestershire County Council approved the project plans submitted by BGL.
In March 2015, BGL secured conditional planning approval for its revised plans.
In June 2015, site preparatory works commenced.
