The project involves the construction of a 2,800MW hydroelectric power plant. It includes the construction of a dam, a diversion weir, shafts, a powerhouse, a substation, access roads, maintenance and control buildings, the installation of turbines, generators, transformers and power control units, and the laying of transmission lines.
In April 2014, the Government of Norway allocated grant to Bhutan to conduct pre-feasibility studies for the project.
