Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp (AQN), through its subsidiary of Windlectric Inc., is planning to undertake the construction of a wind farm in Loyalist Township, Ontario, Canada.
The project involves the construction of a 75MW wind farm comprising 26 turbines. It includes the construction of a powerhouse, a substation and related infrastructure, the installation of transformers, and the laying of transmission lines.
Siemens has been appointed as turbine supplier and Windlectric Inc. will develop, construct, and operate the project.
The in-house division of AQN is undertaking the construction activities.
Stantec Consulting Ltd. has been appointed as consultant for preparing Renewable Energy Approval application for the proposed project. HATCH Consulting as Engineering Consultant and Intrinsik as Environmental and Health Science Consultant.
Stantec is providing professional consulting services in environmental sciences, consultation and project management.
In March 2014, Association to Protect Amherst Island (APAI) submitted a lawsuit against the decision of Ministry of the Environment to declare complete the Renewable Energy Approval (REA) for the project.
On August 26, 2015, AQN secured conditional approval from The Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change for the proposed project.
In January 2016, the project is facing delays due to the opposition of local residents.
As of July 2016, the project is awaiting planning approvals.
Subject to approvals, construction work to commence in the fourth quarter of 2017.
