Tata Steel Europe Ltd (TATASTEEL) is planning to undertake the expansion of a gas-fired power plant in Wales, the UK.
The project involves the construction of a power plant to increase the generation capacity from 115.7MW to 225MW. The proposed power plant will be run on waste gases which are produced as a normal by-product on the Port Talbot site. The project includes the construction of two new boilers (164 Megawatt thermal (MWth)) and two new steam turbine sets with a gross capacity of up to 130 Megawatt electrical (MWe) with integral cooling units.
It will include the construction of two 120m high stacks and access roads, the laying of pipelines and the installation of two boilers and two steam turbines.
GVA, Aecom was appointed as consultants and Pinsent Masons as legal advisor for the project.
On January 27, 2014, the official public consultation on the project was initiated which closed on March 14, 2014.
On September 22, 2014, the project was approved by the planning inspectorate.
On December 8, 2015, the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has given development consent to the project.
In March 2016, National Resources Wales (NRW) granted Environmental Permit for the development of the project.
In August 2016, the project was being delayed due to unfavorable market conditions.
Planning activities are underway.
