The Airport Express Air and Rail Company Pvt Ltd (AEARCPL) is undertaking the Fort Colombo-Katunayake expressway metro railway line project in Sri Lanka.
The project involves the construction of a 30km metro railway line between Fort Colombo to Katunayake Expressway via Fort Railway Station and Negombo Lagoon.
It includes the construction of two terminus, the first at the Katunayake Airport and the other at Fort, Colombo. a main railway station with two parallel railway lines running to and from these two destinations, railway stations, rail bridges and other related facilities and the laying of rail tracks.
KPMG India has been appointed as the feasibility study consultant for the project. The actual route tracing and basic engineering studies will be done in collaboration with Isuru Engineering, the Civil Engineering Works partner of Garamspace Co. of Korea.
In September 2012, the basic studies were concluded and submitted to the Ministry of Transport.
In March 2013, Japan International Cooperation Agency was appointed as the master planner for the project.
In September 2015, AEARCPL of Malaysia and the Sri Lankan Government signed a contract to begin an electric train system between Negombo and Colombo.
