Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), a subsidiary of Mubadala Development Company, is undertaking the Masdar City Development project in Abu Dhabi, the UAE.
The project involves construction of mixed-use facilities on an area of 6 million m2 and will be built in seven phases, starting with the development of energy generation facility and infrastructure works.
First phase comprises development of a 1 million m2 area and includes construction of Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), Masdar’s Headquarters Building, Swiss Village, Siemens Middle East Headquarters Building, and a commercial building called The Courtyard Building.
Second phase consists of residential units, two student accommodation blocks with 200 rooms and a 10,000m2 L shaped office building, third phase includes ADFEC headquarters and public buildings, fourth phase involves community center, fifth phase consists of science center complex and sixth phase consists of residential and technology park.
It also includes the construction of 40 to 60MW solar power plant, which will be built by German firm Conergy, a 5MW Geothermal plant, a Swiss village on 200,000m2, commercial and manufacturing facilities, schools and colleges, shopping centers, entertainment centers, water transfer infrastructure, sewage system and hospitals.
Al Jaber Energy Services LLC, part of the Al Jaber Group was awarded US$1,600 million contract for infrastructure and enabling works for development of the first phase in April 2009.
The joint-venture of Ahmadiah Contracting, Trading Company, Hip Hing Construction Company and Arabian Construction Company has been awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract of Masdar Institute. ACC is also responsible for the construction of The Courtyard Building.
WS Atkins plc, Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill Architecture were appointed as architects, Foster and Partners, WSP Group plc as master planners.
CH2M HILL, Parsons Brinckerhoff have been awarded the PMC Contract.
The Masdar Headquarters building has faced delays due to repeated tendering process. The EPC tender was cancelled twice before a fresh tender was issued in late 2011. The last date for bids submission is February 19, 2012.
In November 2010, construction works on second phase of the project commenced and were completed in first quarter of 2013.
In October 2012, the main construction contract for Masdar Headquarters was awarded to Brookfield Multiplex.
Construction activities on the headquarters building completed in August 2014.
In January 2014, Siemens Middle East Headquarters Building was completed.
In April 2015, construction of a residential complex consisting 500 apartments was commenced.
Majid Al Futtaim has been appointed as developer for Shopping plaza called "My City Centre" and construction is expected to be complete in the fourth quarter of 2018.
ADFEC is in process of negotiating with Reykjavik Geothermal to build a 5MW geothermal energy facility as part of the project.
