ACWA Power Barka (ACWA) is undertaking the Independent Water Desalination Plant Expansion project in Oman.
The project involves the construction of a desalination plant with a capacity of 39 million gallons per day (MGD) and is being implemented in three phases of 12MGD, 12.5MGD and 14.5MGD in first, second and third phases respectively using SWRO technology.
The project will include the construction of a processing unit, storage tanks, the installation of pipes and safety systems.
The expansion project is being undertaken on build, own and operate (BOO) basis and will be funded by a syndicated loan from local and regional financial institutions.
Sogex Oman has been appointed as MEP contractor.
In July 2012, ACWA Power Barka, a subsidiary of ACWA Power International, was appointed as BOO contractor.
In July 2012, Abengoa was appointed as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor of the plant, as well as its subsequent operation and maintenance support for first phase of the project (12MGD) at value of US$55 million.
In September 2012, Oman Power and Water Procurement Co. (OPWP) and ACWA signed a water purchase agreement (WPA).
In November 2012, the construction work on first phase commenced and was completed in the second quarter of 2014.
In December 2014, Osmoflo was appointed as EPC contractor, as well as its subsequent operation and maintenance support for second phase of the project.
In January 2015, Acwa Power closed US$70 million syndicated loan from Bank Muscat and National Bank of Oman for the second phase of the project.
In January 2015, the construction works on second phase commenced and was completed in early 2016.
Planning activities on the third phase are underway.
