The Aluminum industry in Russia dates back to the 1930s and the Volkhov smelter in the Leningrad region was the first smelter in the country. The Volkhov smelter also produced the first batch of aluminum in Russia. The aluminum industry in Russia has been undergoing consolidation in recent years as in 2007, RUSAL merged with SUAL and the alumina arm of Glencore. This created the global aluminum leader United Company RUSAL. RUSAL is the largest producer of aluminum in the world and accounts for 10% of the world's total aluminum production.
Operating in nearly 20 countries, the company has 15 aluminum smelters, 8 bauxite mines, 11 alumina refiners, two silicon factories, three aluminum powder plants, two secondary aluminum plants, one cathode plant, two cryolite and four foil mills.
In 2013, the industry had revenues of over USD 7 billion, though the industry has been undergoing a period of contraction for the last couple of years. The industry is expected to recover and sales are expected to be boosted by the end of 2018, with revenues reaching almost USD 9 billion in 2018.
