Aluminum Industry in Brazil 2015

Aluminum Industry in Brazil 2015

Over the years, the aluminum industry in Brazil has undergone drastic changes. These changes have brought about a new shift in both the supply and demand side of the aluminum industry in the country. The last couple of years has witnessed a severe contraction in the Brazilian aluminum industry and it is likely that these decreases are going to continue in the future. Stability can be expected but with less than moderate growth patterns.

The aluminum industry in Brazil had revenues of USD2.5 billion in 2013 while production volume of aluminum decreased to reach 1.3 million tons in the same year. The industry is expected to further decline by 2018, reaching USD2.4 billion at the end of 2018.

Four industries primarily account for the majority of aluminum consumption in the country. These are transportation, construction, beverages and the electricity sector. While the outlook for these four industries remain very positive in the coming years, forces also point to a higher intensity of aluminum usage in the country. There was a time when Brazil was the sixth largest producer of aluminum in the world, however, now it has dropped to being the eight as it witnessed nearly 20 percent of its installed capacity being shut down, owing primarily to poor competitiveness in the cost of electricity in the Primary segment.
