The fragmented nature of the industry is evident from market share data. The three leading manufacturers accounted for less than 30% of dollar value of sales in 2017. Several participants manufacture fewer than 100 units annually.
Grain bodies are mounted on Class 7 and 8 heavy-duty chassis, with more than 80% mounted on Class 8 chassis. Bodies are manufactured in steel and aluminum, with steel used in more than two-thirds of all bodies.
More than 40% of grain bodies are manufactured in the Western Canada region where eleven manufacturers are located. In the United States, 35% of US + Canada grain truck/body production is in the West North Central division of the Midwest region—corn and soybean producing states.
