Study of the Fast Growing China Retail Sector

China is currently the world’s second largest and Asia’s largest retail market. The country is set to become the largest retail market in the world by 2016

As of October end 2014, the total retail sales of consumer goods in China was valued at USD 390.15 billion, a growth of 11.5% year-on-year

While the retail sector overall saw sluggish growth in 2013 primarily because of the constant pressure from the slowdown in domestic macroeconomic growth, online retail segment which currently forms 8% of total retail sales in the country saw robust growth

Increasing online retail sales is giving tough competition to brick and mortar stores. Alibaba Group’s Tmall is the largest ecommerce player in the country followed by JD. More than 90% online sales are being completed through personal computers, though the share of mobile devices is consistently rising
