Appendix A Names And Addresses Of Major U.S. Pump Manufacturers And Marketers And Their Subsidiaries

SBI has just released an in-depth analysis of the $10 billion pump and pumping equipment industry. The report covers all types of industrial and commercial pumps. Separate sections analyze shipments, exports, imports and price trends for eight industry categories: centrifugal pumps, fluid power pumps, other industrial and commercial pumps, vacuum pumps, domestic water systems and sump pumps, oil well and oil field pumps, measuring and dispensing pumps, and pump parts and attachments. Data trends are evaluated to uncover growing product lines- domestically and in world markets. Pump sales are also analyzed by end use market. Purchases are shown for capital projects, construction contractors, manufacturers and government agencies. As part of this analysis, SBI evaluated the factors affecting U.S. pump demand such as industrial production, construction spending and the world energy situation. In addition, SBI investigated the competitive environment and plant costs and profit margins. Nine leading manufacturers were profiled and the recent developments of 20 leading producers are reviewed in order to uncover competitor growth- and profit-oriented strategies. Major competitors reviewed include Flowserve, ITT Industries, Pentair and Tokheim.

Pumping Profits – Pump Sales Benefit from Expanding Industrial Economy and New Building Construction

New York, October 5/PRNewswire – MarketResearch.com, the premiere business intelligence marketplace, announced the release of a new study “Pumps” by Specialists in Business Information. According to the study, U.S. pump sales have accelerated along with the current economic expansion, benefiting from rising industrial output that increased pump purchases for plant capitol projects and manufacturer product inputs. Also, stronger gains in new building construction activity have increased pump sales in this key end-use market. U.S. pump market sales are forecast to increase at a 6.2% compound annual rate over the next five years and market sales are projected to climb to $13.4 billion by 2005.

“So far, the strongest growing pump market sector on a dollar basis has been reciprocating pumps”, said Claire Madden, VP of marketing at MarketResearch.com, “but with rising energy prices boosting oil and gas drilling activity, look for oil well and oil field pumps to be the strongest growing sector in this industry”.

Stronger market sales gains, however, have contributed to increased competitive pressures. The number of U.S. based manufacturers of industrial and commercial pumps have risen to 670 in 2000. This is up from 623 manufacturers in 1997. These rising competitive pressures have resulted in weakening product price gains, yet margins improved due to a concerted industry-wide effort to improve labor productivity. This was accomplished by manufacturers reducing employment levels and from moderating hourly wage rate gains. Major manufacturers also contributed to improved industry efficiency through a series of significant mergers and acquisitions in the 1990’s. The study shows that even though there has been a drop in the average price per unit sold in many of the major pump categories, the business has managed to grow steadily through an industry-wide effort of reducing costs at the manufacturing level. This growth is expected to sustain as industrial, commercial, construction, and drilling enterprises continue to expand worldwide.

Scope And Methodology

The SBI Market Profile on Pumps is a guide to the growth- and profit-oriented opportunities for manufacturers and marketers of industrial and commercial pumps, fluid power pumps, vacuum pumps, and measuring and dispensing pumps. This comprehensive database covers U.S. shipments, exports, imports, the number of domestic manufacturers, end-use market purchases, the competitive environment, and the cost structure of domestic plants. In addition, the leading manufacturers and marketers are profiled in order to review major competitor strategies.

U.S. pump market trends are analyzed in the Executive Summary Section (Section 1). SBI compiled U.S. Department of Commerce statistics on U.S. shipments, exports, and imports in order to calculate U.S. market sales. Similar calculations were made for 12 industry trends. Data is provided on a dollar and quantity basis. Price trends are analyzed from Bureau of Labor Statistics surveys.

A similar analysis is provided for eight industry categories in Sections 2 through 9. Each section provides shipments, exports, and imports by product line. Data is also provided on the number of U.S. manufacturers for each line. Export statistics are also evaluated by the major countries of destination and import statistics by the major countries of origin. Import data is derived from U.S. Customs records. This format was used to investigate the market for centrifugal pumps, fluid power pumps, other industrial and commercial pumps, vacuum pumps, domestic water systems and sump pumps, oil well and oil field pumps, measuring and dispensing pumps, and pump parts and attachments sold separately.

Section 10 analyzes the data compiled on end-use markets. Department of Commerce data sources provide purchases of pumps and compressors by major end-use market: business capital purchases, construction contractor purchases, manufacturer inputs, and government purchases. Manufacturer input purchases of industrial and commercial pumps and fluid power pumps are further segmented by detailed user market. As part of this analysis, SBI evaluated the factors affecting U.S. pump demand. Statistics on U.S. industrial production by end-use market are compiled from the Federal Reserve Board. U.S. spending on construction by type of building and facility is compiled from Department of Commerce data. Energy Information Administration data on oil and gas production and well drilling activity was compiled to evaluate the impact of rising energy prices on the demand for oil well and oil field pumps.

SBI also utilized Department of Commerce surveys to investigate the competitive environment, manufacturer cost structure, and plant profitability (Section 11). Data trends include the number of companies and plants specializing in the industry’s major product sectors, plant shipments, and the share of shipments allocated to payroll, other labor costs, and material costs. From this analysis, SBI calculated the industry’s gross plant profit margin. In addition, the domestic industry’s labor situation was evaluated, including the number of employees, shipments per employee, and production workers’ average hourly wages and weekly hours. SBI supplements U.S. Department of Commerce data with individual company information. Data includes sales and profit margins for some 20 leading manufacturers, as well as recent company developments. The top nine manufacturers and marketers were profiled in detail. Annual reports, databases, and trade journals were searched for growth- and profit-oriented strategies.

Action-oriented executives are urged to use this comprehensive statistical database to uncover growing sales opportunities, develop new products, take advantage of global sales opportunities, and initiate profitable operating strategies. Executives are urged to compute their own company’s market share and compare their company’s own operating ratios to the industry average as part of this process.
