New Zealand - Ultra-Fast Broadband Network - Overview and Analysis

Attention: There is an updated edition available for this report.

The New Zealand Ultra-Fast Broadband and the Regional Broadband Initiatives are now both in deployment across the countryside, yet it will be many years for these developments to be completed. But these infrastructure deployments will set the stage for many new developments utilising these high-speed broadband networks.

Uptake of fibre has been slow during the first year as they have been in Australia where these new developments must compete with existing technologies. Yet these high-speed networks are now connecting schools with all schools to be connected by 2015.

The Rural Broadband Initiative is being developed by the joint venture of Chorus and Vodafone. Chorus is working on the rural network by installing and upgrading fibre to roadside cabinets and infrastructure equipment with retails service providers connecting the users while Vodafone is providing a wireless broadband service to many rural communities using the backbone fibre network.

In this report we provide an overview of the networks and the deliverables with BuddeComm analysis and we also provide an overview of the companies involved in the rollouts.

Wireless broadband, GPON, PON, regulatory issues, fibre rollouts progressing, Local Fibre Companies and their networks.
