Vietnam - Fixed Broadband Market - Statistics and Analyses
Having come late to the internet, Vietnam has only recently been exploring the possibilities to be found in higher access speeds. The initial roll-out of fixed broadband services was followed by a strong surge in growth, but broadband remained a small but expanding market segment. It needed a stronger market focus by the providers; this seemed to have finally happened with the arrival of mobile broadband. Nonetheless, fixed broadband has provided the firm foundation needed to get the market started and is now continuing to grow in a positive fashion. It remains strategically important for the country.
Coming into 2015 there were an estimated 31 million internet users in this country of around 92 million people. On top of 6 million fixed broadband subscriptions there were around five times that many mobile broadband subscribers. Broadband household penetration was estimated at 29%. The fixed broadband access has been built on the back of an extensive Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) network, with the more recent focus being on fibre-based services. Fixed broadband in general was growing at around 20% per annum, while subscriber growth in fibre-based services was running at around 50% coming into 2015. Not surprisingly the advent of mobile broadband has been pushing down the price of fixed broadband, thereby boosting opportunities for fixed services to expand further.
In the meantime, the government has been particularly active in the development of cyber laws, no doubt because of its deeply ingrained political culture of central control. This report looks at the development of broadband in Vietnam, as well as providing some general background on the country's internet market; it also presents some information on the embryonic e-commerce market.
