Vietnam - Fixed Broadband, Digital Economy and Digital Media - Statistics and Analyses
Having come late to the internet, Vietnam has only recently been exploring the options to be found in higher access speeds. The initial roll-out of fixed broadband services was followed by a strong surge in growth; however, broadband remained a small but expanding market segment. It needed a stronger market focus by the providers; this seemed to have finally happened with the arrival of mobile broadband. Nonetheless, fixed broadband has provided a firm foundation to get the market started and is now continuing to grow in a positive fashion. It remains strategically important for the country.
Coming into 2016 there were an estimated 49 million internet users in this country of around 93 million people. On top of almost 8 million fixed broadband subscriptions there were around five times that many mobile broadband subscribers. Broadband household penetration was estimated at 36%.
In the meantime, the digital economy in Vietnam has been flourishing, although its reach may not be as great as government policy would wish. Initiatives to promote e-commerce throughout the country have been creative and energetic since VNPT submitted an e-commerce development plan for government approval more than a decade ago. The government has been the driving force behind the country's move into the age of the digital economy. It has been constantly emphasising the need to use e-commerce to improve the country's economic competitiveness. The government has also been particularly active in the development of cyber laws, no doubt because of its deeply ingrained political culture of central control.
On another related front, Vietnam is moving quickly towards the digitalisation of TV broadcasting. A strategy plan for conversion to digital TV should see the country's television stations broadcasting completely digital by 2020.

after a long period of low fixed broadband penetration, the market has started to grow strongly;
annual growth in fixed broadband subscribers was running at around 25% into 2016;
most significantly, fibre-based broadband (FttH) subscribers have been growing rapidly;
DSL technology continues to support the majority of fixed broadband services;
VNPT remained the leading provider of DSL services with over 60% of that subscriber base;
the MIC announced widespread implementation of IPv6, particularly for mobile networks, in 2015;
government controls over the internet continued to be a subject of some controversy
Vietnam is rapidly moving online, more than 95% of the population in the 15-24 year age group being counted as internet users;
Mobile operator Vinaphone introduced an e-medicine service' for its customers during 2015;
Vietnam's 2014 UN E-Government Development Index was 0.4705 (99th out of 193 countries);
the digitalisation of TV broadcasting in Vietnam is in progress and set to be completed by 2020;
the MIC issued a set of digital TV standards ahead of the planned digitalisation.
