Having come late to the internet, Vietnam has only recently been exploring the possibilities to be found in higher access speeds. The initial roll-out of some broadband services has been followed by a strong surge in growth, but broadband remained a small but expanding market segment. It needed a stronger market focus by the providers; this seemed to have finally happened with the arrival of mobile broadband. Given that there are signs of an increasingly internet savvy population, it will be interesting to see to what extent the mobile broadband offerings are embraced by the market. Interestingly, the government has been particularly active in the development of cyber laws, no doubt because of its deeply ingrained political culture of central control. This report looks at the development of broadband in Vietnam, as well as providing some general background on the country's internet market; it also presents some information on the embryonic e-commerce market.
In this report we also include scenario forecasts for fixed internet subscriber growth to 2015 and 2020.
the broadband market has started to grow strongly in Vietnam; annual growth in fixed broadband subscribers running at around 20% in 2013; mobile broadband subscribers had passed 20 million by early 2014; there has been rapid growth in fibre-based internet services over the last few years; government controls over the internet continued to be a subject of some controversy.
