Switzerland - Digital Economy and Digital Media - Statistics and Analyses

Switzerland has a mature digital media market, with the country having switched from analogue to digital TV transmission and so enabling digital dividend spectrum to be used for other services including mobile broadband. Swisscom has ramped up its fibre rollout plans, providing fibre-based broadband services to about a third of the population thus far. The company's investment strategy will see it deliver faster broadband services via fibre and G.fast technologies nationally within the next few years, supplemented by LTE infrastructure and DSL bonded with LTE.

Complementary cable networks are dominated by UPC, which has upgraded most of its infrastructure to provide a 500Mb/s services. Together, these networks enable a growing number of consumers to access bundled services. With its continuing migration from copper infrastructure to fibre, Swisscom planned to switch all fixed-voice traffic to VoIP by 2018. Under the terms of Swisscom's revised universal service obligations, which come into effect in mid-2017, the analogue and digital ISDN connections will be replaced with IP.
