Philippines - Broadband Market and Forecasts

Attention: There is an updated edition available for this report.

Compared with many of its Asian neighbours, the Philippines has moved slowly on the adoption of Internet. Nevertheless, this situation has been changing rapidly in recent years. Of the estimated 30% of the population which constituted the Internet-user population coming into 2013, a large proportion of these were using a high-speed broadband connection to go online. In early 2013 available statistics suggested that around 80% of all internet connections were broadband-based services, representing a major shift in the broadband presence in the Philippines in recent years. Broadband penetration as a proportion of the population was still only 7%. This report looks at the various projects and initiatives as the Philippine government continues to encourage the development of broadband in the country. The report also provides information on the wider internet market in the country.

Key developments:

continuing growth in mobile internet usage, with a big surge in mobile broadband access;
broadband subscriber numbers growing strongly (around 20% annual increase), but broadband penetration still less than 10%;
PLDT expanded its international internet gateway capacity to 600Gb/s by end-2012;
PLDT’s aim was to bring its total internet gateway capacity to 1Tb/s by September 2013;
PLDT continued to extend its FttH footprint, reaching 2 million households by early 2013;
the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 was enacted in September 2012; criticism of the legislation remained intense, however, and amendments to the laws were likely;
both Smart and Globe were pushing on with development of cloud computing platforms.

Companies covered in this report include:

PLDT, Smart Communications, Globe Telecom, Liberty Telecom, EasyCall, Altimax, Bayantel, Bell Telecom, Broadband Philippines, Meridian Telekoms, Vega Telecom.
