Netherlands - Broadband Market Insights, Statistics and Forecasts

The Dutch broadband penetration rate is among the highest in the world, the result of large-scale government and municipal investment in broadband infrastructure. The country has comprehensive DSL and cable networks, and has expanded both ADSL2+ Ethernet capabilities to provide data rates to manage burgeoning customer demand for triple play services. In addition, the number of significant fibre deployments represents one of the most extensive and cost-effective fibre infrastructures in Europe.

Although there are a number of smaller operators, the cable sector is largely consolidated, with UPC Nederland in early 2014 having bid for the remaining stake in Ziggo which is does not already own. The combined operator would have networks covering some seven million homes, or 90% of all Dutch homes. This report profiles the Dutch fixed and wireless broadband markets, providing statistics and analysis on technologies including ADSL2+, vectoring VDSL, FttP, powerline broadband, wireless broadband, WiFi and internet via satellite. We also provide broadband forecasts for selective years through to 2020.

Key developments:

KPN extends vectoring VDSL trials, upgrades FttP to 1Gb/s in select areas; smaller cablecos by-passing DOCSIS3.0 for FttP; Liberty Global to purchase remaining stake in Ziggo; KPN increases stake in Reggefiber to 60%, joins the Fon WiFi network; average download speed reaches 16Mb/s; Ziggo invests in national WiFi infrastructure; Netherlands passes network neutrality legislation; KPN launches 500Mb/s FttP service; regulator market data for Q2 2013; telcos' operating and financial data to Q4 2013; market developments to early 2014.
