Nepal - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband - Statistics and Analyses
Nepal's mobile market sees extraordinary growth over five years
Over the years, efforts to expand the telecom sector in Nepal have met with many challenges. Nepal's mountainous topography has made it extremely difficult to develop its telecommunications infrastructure. Furthermore, Nepal had been struggling under an adverse economic situation caused largely by political instability.
The fixed line market in Nepal remains underdeveloped. A major reason for this is due to the dominance of the mobile segment. Overall penetration increased slightly from 2012 to 2017. The market is predicted to increase only slightly further over the next five years to 2022 as the mobile segment continues to grow for both voice and data/broadband usage.
In mid 2017 Nepal Telecom (NT) was speeding up work to extend its coverage to 175 new locations nationwide, while network extension platforms will be shared with other phone companies. The expansion is in line with its aim to connect the remote belt of the country with the telecom network.
The penetration of Internet users in Nepal remains very low by international standards however has grown very strongly over the past five years driven by strong growth in mobile broadband.
Fixed broadband penetration in Nepal remains very low mainly due to a limited number of fixed lines and the subsequent dominance of the mobile platform. Also the declining number of fixed lines is restricting more widespread development of fixed broadband. Over the next five years to 2022 strong growth is expected to continue.
Nepal's mobile market is now relatively developed and has experienced extraordinarily strong growth over the last five years. Moderate growth is predicted over the next five years to 2022. The market will be constrained from higher growth due to very strong local competition and a maturing market.
