Morocco - Telecoms Infrastructure, Operators, Regulations - Statistics and Analyses

Morocco retains one of the most advanced telecommunications markets in Africa, featuring a majority-privatised, profitable incumbent telco in Maroc Telecom and three fixed and mobile network operators. A key regional player, Orange, has become a majority stakeholder in the telco Médi Telecom, which is in the process of being rebranded as Orange Morocco.

The country also has one of the highest mobile penetration rates in the region as well as some of the lowest prices for broadband internet access, despite there being relatively little competition in the fixed-line broadband sector. Competition in the provision of DSL services intensified during 2016 following the launch of services by Inwi and Médi Telecom. Médi Telecom's new owner, Orange Group, is committed to invest in a range of bundled service which will see it expand its fixed-line broadband offerings during the next few years. Most of the new broadband connections are wireless and increasingly converging with mobile services. To accommodate the increasing voice and internet traffic, operators have upgraded their fibre optic national backbone networks and international connectivity. In combination with upgraded fibre backhaul, LTE services launched in mid-2015 have facilitated the take-up of mobile broadband in regional areas, and so contributed to the governments aims as drawn up in its National Broadband Plan.

Key developments:

Government progresses with several telecom projects to carry it through to 2018; Médi Telecom to be rebranded as Orange Morocco by end-2016; Maroc Telecom designated as having SMP in several market areas; satellite telecom licenses awarded; new cable connecting Mali and Morocco is lit; amendment to Telecommunications Act aimed at giving greater powers to the regulator; e-government developments; new terabit international fibre optic cable comes online; National Broadband Plan to 2018 making progress; report updates includes the regulator's market data to June 2016, telcos' financial and operating data to Q3 2016, recent market developments.
