Mobile Communications - The Industry into 2014 - Australia
The major mobile network operators in Australia Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone (VHA) provide a range of services essential for commerce as well as communication and social networking. These services have evolved from basic voice and SMS messaging to encompass high-end mobile data applications including gaming and m-commerce. Although mobile penetration is above 130%, and continues to rise as users make use of multiple SIMs and connected devices, MNOs must find innovative business models and provide attractive bundles and innovative services to increase revenue in a competitive market.Mobile broadband usage in particular has taken off during the last few years, a trend which will continue following the introduction of a wider range of affordable devices. iPhones and Android-based devices dominate this segment, though the revitalised Windows Phone stands to make some headway in conjunction with the recently released Windows Surface 3 tablet. Alongside these devices has been the proliferation of mobile apps, a market which has been thrown open to developers and which has become a key facilitator for mobile broadband growth.
