Mexico - Mobile Infrastructure, Broadband, Operators - Statistics and Analyses

Growth in the Mexican mobile market has begun to slow in response to higher penetration. Telcel still dominates the market, accounting for about 70% of subscribers. The regulator has endeavoured to encourage competition since 2010, and legislation passed in late 2013 aims to reduce the dominance of Telcel in the mobile market and of Telmex in the fixed-line segment.

Following the 3G spectrum auctions held in 2010, operators such as Movistar and Nextel have become better positioned to offer mobile data services. This report provides an overview of Mexico's mobile market, including a range statistical data as well as subscriber forecasts to 2016.

Key Developments:

Telcel looking to sell assets in eastern and northern areas; AT&T completes acquisition of Iusacell and Nextel Mexico; Supermarket chain Grupo Comercial Chedraui signs MVNO deal with Movistar; Nextel launches LTE in three cities; Movistar investing MXN3 billion to expand LTE to 300 cities by 2018; government reduces investment in State-owned shared mobile network from $10 billion to $7 billion; small rural town of Villa Talea de Castro creates an independent mobile network; Telcel reports fall in its subscriber base as it reduces market share to below 50%; Virgin Mobile Latin America launches services on Movistar's network; regulator takes control of 2.5GHz spectrum, reassigns it for 4G; Banorte launches MiFon mobile banking service; América Móvil develops m-payment platform with banks; operators sign up to data roaming transparency scheme; regulator considers auctioning blocks of 15MHz in the 700MHz band; regulator's market data updates to September 2014; telcos' financial and operating data to Q2 2015; recent market developments.
