Malaysia - Mobile Communications, Broadcasting, and Forecasts

The remarkable growth in Malaysia's mobile market over a number of years could not hide the fact that the industry was in need of restructuring. Behind the strong growth, there was considerable activity going on with changes to the companies and further reshaping of the local telecom sector. The number of operators in Malaysia reduced from five to three and then, with 3G licences having been awarded in a two stage process, next generation services have since been rolled out and had started having a major impact on the market. These networks are also being upgraded to higher versions of 3G technology. A new operator, U Mobile, had entered the market specifically offering 3G services. Into 2011, growth in total subscribers moderated somewhat, as the market appeared to almost pause. But the momentum had picked up again in 2012/2013 and mobile data certainly was providing a fresh spark to segment growth. This report looks at the developments in the Malaysian mobile market and reviews the changes taking place. It also provides some general information on Malaysia's broadcasting market.

Key developments:

The MCMC, having awarded spectrum in the 2.6GHz band to nine companies, was preparing to formally assign licences after reviewing business plans; Access by the operators to the assigned frequencies was not expected until the beginning of 2013; Progress being made on closing the urban/rural divide, with expanding mobile infrastructure in rural areas; expansion and upgrade of 3G networks to High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), etc, being pursued vigorously by operators; the MCMC held its 2.6GHz auction in December 2012, opening the way for 4G/LTE services; the MCMC was preparing to issue a contract for infrastructure to support digital broadcasting.
