Finland - Mobile Market Insights, Statistics and Forecasts

Attention: There is an updated edition available for this report.

Finland has one of most innovative mobile markets in Europe. The country was a pioneer in developing 3G, and was the first to deploy 3G over 900MHz spectrum. Growth in the sector continues to be strong despite high mobile penetration. The 3G now makes up almost a third of the total subscriber base, while mobile broadband has also grown considerably during the last two years. Finland was also one of the first countries in the world to deploy a commercial LTE service, which now extends to well over half the population. In addition, the country boasts one of the lowest mobile call charges of all EU Member States. This report provides statistics and research on the Finnish mobile market, including key regulatory issues, a snapshot of the consumer market, the growth of mobile data services and the development of emerging technologies and networks such as HSPA and LTE.

Key developments:

MNP conditions revised; TeliaSonera’s LTE network recording 48Mb/s, extended to 50 locations; Russia and Finland negotiate roaming agreements; government calls for legislative amendments to expedite 700MHz band for mobile broadband; Finland free to use 800MHz for LTE following spectrum agreement with Russia; regulator starts tender process for 800MHz auction in early 2013; MTR reduction agreed to late 2014; DNA expands HSPA+/LTE to 50% of the population, LTE now available to more than one million Finns; Elisa launches LTE in Espoo; mobile broadband accounts for over half of all broadband subscribers; regulator’s H1 2012 market data report; telco financial and operating data to September 2012; market developments to January 2013.
