Finland - Mobile Infrastructure, Broadband, Operators - Statistics and Analyses

Attention: There is an updated edition available for this report.

Finland retains one of most advanced mobile markets in Europe. The country was the first to deploy 3G using 900MHz spectrum, and more recently it has auctioned spectrum in the 800MHz to extend the availability of LTE services nationally. The Finnish vendor Nokia Networks is also involved in developing 5G technologies. Growth in the number of mobile subscribers has stalled, in line with the high penetration, while the market has shifted to mobile data and mobile broadband. Market competition has helped keep mobile call charges among the lowest among EU member states. Regulated tariffs and termination rates have also put revenue pressure on MNOs. This report provides statistics and research on the Finnish mobile market, including key regulatory issues, a snapshot of the consumer market, the growth of mobile data services and the development of emerging technologies and networks such as HSPA and LTE.

Key developments:

TeliaSonera launches commercial LTE-A in Helsinki; DNA trials LTE-A, providing peak data of 270Mb/s; Ukko Mobile contracts Huawei to develop an LTE450 network; Sonera and DNA make progress with joint mobile network to deliver services in Northern and Eastern Finland; Nokia develops trial 5G data network; MTRs reduced, effective to November 2015; MNP conditions revised; government calls for legislative amendments to expedite 700MHz band for mobile broadband; Finland signs 800MHz spectrum agreement with Russia; regulator auctions 800MHz for LTE; mobile broadband accounting for over half of all broadband subscribers; report update includes the regulator's market data update to June 2015; telcos' financial and operating data to Q2 2015; recent market developments.
