Chile - Broadband and Broadcasting Market - Insights, Statistics and Analysis
Chile's broadband penetration is relatively high compared with other Latin American countries. The country has benefited from solid GDP growth during the last decade, with a decline recorded only in 2009 as the effects of the GFC were first felt. GDP per capita is among the highest in the region, which has translated into disposable income for telecom services. The population is also receptive to new technologies, so encouraging operators to develop services based on LTE and fibre-based broadband infrastructure. Broadband services in Chile are among the fastest and least expensive in Latin America. In terms of both broadband penetration and broadband speed, Chile ranks second in South and Central America after Uruguay.
Although a number of operators compete in the broadband sector, Movistar remains the market leader, followed by VTR Globalcom and Claro. Competition in the broadband market is intense, though given the dominance of the major players much of this competition is cross-platform.
Chile's pay television market is one of the most mature in the region, with penetration ranking third in South America after Argentina and Uruguay. By mid-2015 over half of all households subscribed to pay TV services.
