Australia - Radio - Overview and Statistics

Attention: There is an updated edition available for this report.

Resurgence in radio has occurred over the last decade or so as listeners have additional ways of listening ranging from the radio over the air, streaming on the internet or through digital radio. In 2011-2012 company mergers and acquisitions continued. DMG Radio Australia saw its 2009 50% partnership owner assume control while the Austereo Group merged into Southern Cross Media and Fairfax offloading its regional radio stations.

Nevertheless media ownership still has the constant threat of altered legislation even possibly if governments change. Meanwhile the convergence review recommendations still hang in the balance in early 2013 and may or may not get past the parliament before the next federal election in September 2013.

Although its advertising base is growing, the radio market is losing share to other media sectors. While radio is still available over AM and FM frequencies, and almost three-quarters of all radio is commercially operated. New technology including digital radio, podcasting and converged multi-media technologies are offering new revenue opportunities, threats and challenges.

The major commercial radio broadcasters include the Australian Radio Network, Southern Cross Media, DMG Radio Australia, and Macquarie Radio Network with Fairfax Media selling its regional stations to Grant Broadcasters in late 2011. The radio networks have established metropolitan and regional footprints through aggregation and together account for around 75% of the market. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation accounts for almost all of the remaining radio audience.

In this report we provide statistics on radio usage patterns including revenue streams in tabular and easy-to-read chart formats, a radio history timeline, and also an overview of the markets of the major players.
